Canyons

Canyons

The canyon lands of southwestern United States may be the most beautiful part of this continent. The Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Glen Canyon are in Arizona. Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon are in Utah. They are visited by millions or tourists from all over the world every year. The ancestors of our Native Americans arrived thousands of years earlier. The Navajo and Hopi residents continue a tradtion of devotion and reverence to this wondrous landscape.

Canyons by Doxter S captures the spirit of the canyon lands and its people in a song based on the Native Flute. The melody uses a simple pentatonic scale in a minor key. The percussion is a Native Hand Drum. The female vocalist sings sweetly.

T’was a paradise filled with waterfalls
Took a million years formed these canyon walls
Where the Hoodoos stand in majestic rows
T’was a Fairyland everybody knows that their
Spirits live among the pinyon pines

I remember when we took that trip to Zion
Gazing at the Emerald Pools with stars above
Then the moon rose brightly over Angel’s Landing
When you took my hand and said you’d be my love

T’was a desert land when the Hopi came
So the Hopi prayed and they danced for rain
Kokopelli played on his magic flute
Then this barren place started bearing fruit
Still his spirit lives within these canyon walls

We went floating down a lazy Colorado
Up above the canyon walls we spied the moon
By the warm campfire we saw shadows dancing
Then the flame went out. It ended much too soon

Fare thee well my love you know where you will find me
In that Fairyland you found me at the start
When you’re here my soul is soaring like an eagle
When you’re gone you leave a canyon in my heart
